The People Behind Your Project's Success

Our talented team is always ready to go above and beyond to meet your construction and engineering needs. Get to know the faces behind Connor Jones Group—the professionals who bring 47+ years of combined experience, a bit of humour, and serious expertise to every project.

Tom Connor - Managing Director

The Visionary Who Gets Things Done

Tom brings 19+ years of construction and engineering management expertise to every project, having started his journey at just 16 years old. As Managing Director, he’s the driving force behind our integrated approach and personally handles initial client consultations.

What impresses him most? 3D house printing technology—entire homes printed in concrete. “It’s the future of construction efficiency.”

Dream project? A space shuttle terminal or massive aquarium. “Why think small when you can think extraordinary?”

When he’s not building dreams: You’ll find Tom with his family, lost in a fantasy novel, or out on the water fishing. “Quality family time and good adventures—that’s what life’s about.”

Chris Jones - Company Director and Quality Management

The Quality Guardian with 28 Years of Wisdom

Chris started in construction at 16 and hasn’t looked back. With 28 years of experience, he’s our Company Director responsible for Quality Management, specialising in construction management and risk mitigation. If there’s a potential problem, Chris has probably seen it before—and knows how to prevent it.

His approach? “Quality isn’t just checked at the end—it’s built into every stage.”

When he’s not ensuring perfection: Chris loves tinkering with cars, riding motorbikes, and spending quality time with family. “There’s something therapeutic about working with your hands, whether it’s construction or cars.”

Ben Wardhaugh - Quantity Surveyor

The Numbers Guy with a Passion for Dunedin's Future

Ben handles the financial and contractual aspects of our projects with 5 years of construction industry experience. He has a particular interest in construction law, because someone needs to read the fine print!

His dream collaboration? Historic Dunedin architects Robert Lawson or Edmund Anscombe. “I’ve worked on buildings they designed. The skill and detail in those old blueprints is incredible.”

His vision for Dunedin? A large hotel development. “Dunedin needs something like this to keep pace as a modern city, and it would be an exciting challenge.”

Adventure mode: Trail running, hunting, fishing—”anything outdoors really!” You might spot Ben exploring Dunedin’s trails when he’s not crunching project numbers.

Ben Taylor - Operations Manager

The Renovation Problem-Solving Specialist

With 10 years in construction, Ben is our Operations Manager and resident renovation expert. He loves the challenge of “changing something into something else”, especially turning heritage buildings into luxury apartments.

His favourite innovation? BuilderTrend portal. “It’s really cool that clients can see what’s happening behind the scenes. Communication, daily logs, progress photos—transparency at its best.”

Dream project? “A homeless shelter big enough to house everyone in need in New Zealand. Swimming pool, cafes with free coffee, roller coaster inside—the works.”

His philosophy: “You can’t beat family time. It’s why I work hard… to make the time.”

Steven Fern - Engineering Manager & Designer

The 30+ Year Engineering Veteran

Steven brings over three decades of engineering experience to our team, handling mechanical design and fabrication team management. He’s seen it all and designed most of it.

What excites him most? “3D scanning of existing structures into CAD software, 3D printing, digital twin technology—the future is here.”

Dream collaboration? Architecture van Brandenburg for the Dunedin Waterfront project. “When they get the go-ahead, I want in!”

Impossible dream project? A bridge between New Zealand’s North and South Islands. “There’s one between Denmark and Sweden, so it’s possible! Practical AND a tourist attraction.”

Real life vs. dreams: “I like motorcycling, kayaking, tramping, skiing. Reality is chauffeuring kids, walking the dog, gardening, shopping, cooking—you know how it is!”

Bruce - Office Security & Site Inspector

The Four-Legged Professional

Bruce takes his security duties very seriously and provides excellent morale support during long project days. He’s also surprisingly good at site inspections; nothing gets past those ears.
